NHS MenB vaccination
The free NHS MenB jab for everyone born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, and for new students this autumn. Two doses, 4 weeks apart.
- Free on the NHS until 31 March 2027
- For everyone born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, and new students born on or after 21 July 2001
- Two doses, at least 4 weeks apart: the first by 31 December 2026
- Recorded on your NHS record the same day, and your GP surgery is told
The pharmacist checks you’re eligible, and that the jab is right for you, before it’s given.
If you feel very unwell, call NHS 111, or in an emergency, 999.
What you get
Why have it
Most meningococcal disease in the UK is caused by group B, and young people starting university or college, living with lots of new people, are at higher risk. The MenACWY jab many had at school doesn’t protect against meningitis B.
Who can have it free
Everyone born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, whatever their plans. And anyone born on or after 21 July 2001 who is starting university, or a college where they’ll live, for the first time this autumn. New students: bring your offer email or letter, or a screenshot from UCAS Hub.
Two doses
The second dose is at least 4 weeks after the first. Have the first by 31 December 2026 and the second by 31 March 2027. We’ll book the second with you before you leave.
Afterwards
A sore arm, a headache or a slight temperature for a day or two are common. We record the jab on your NHS record the same day, and your GP surgery is told.
Quick answers
- I’ve already started university. Can I still have it?
- Yes, if this is your first year at university, or at a college where you live, and you were born on or after 21 July 2001. Have the first dose by 31 December 2026.
- What do I need to bring?
- If you were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, just yourself. New students born outside those dates: your offer email or letter, or a screenshot from UCAS Hub.
- Can I pay for it if I’m not in these groups?
- Not here: we give the NHS service only. Babies have MenB with their routine jabs, and people with some health conditions, such as no working spleen, can have it from their GP.
- Do I need both doses?
- Yes. The course protects best once both are done, at least 4 weeks apart.
- How long does it take?
- About 15 minutes with the pharmacist in our private consultation room.
- Where is it?
- Oswaldtwistle Pharmacy, 300 Union Road, Oswaldtwistle, Accrington, BB5 3JD.
- When are you open?
- Monday to Saturday, 8:00am to 10:30pm. Sunday, 12 noon to 10:30pm.
