24-hour blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)

A small monitor you wear for 24 hours, fitted by the pharmacist, to see what your blood pressure really does through a day and a night.

Book online at least 1 day ahead

  • Fitted in 20 minutes, worn for 24 hours, dropped back the next day
  • Free when a pharmacist, GP or nurse has asked for it after a high reading
  • Two monitors a day, so book your fitting ahead
  • The results go to you and your GP

There are two monitors, each out for 24 hours: if the day you want is full, the next free fitting is shown.

If you feel very unwell, call NHS 111, or in an emergency, 999.

What you get

Why 24 hours?

One reading in a clinic can be high just because you’re in a clinic. A day and a night of readings shows the real picture, which is what your GP needs before deciding on treatment.

What happens

The cuff goes on your upper arm and the monitor clips to your belt or bag. It takes a reading every 30 minutes by day and every hour at night. You carry on as normal, then bring it back about the same time the next day.

What you get

A printed report of your readings, explained by the pharmacist, and a copy sent to your GP practice.
